CITY-WIDE EVENTS

Carnival Connection / Conexion Carnaval explores the customs and historic relationships between carnival traditions in the Caribbean, Latin America and the Gulf Coast. While Houston does not have an identifiable carnival tradition like New Orleans, Rio de Janeiro or Trinidad, its diverse population from around the world has interest in all carnival traditions. Carnival Connection will help Houston lead the way in the multicultural exploration of carnival, from Italy to the Canary Islands and Caribbean, and across Gulf Coast and throughout Latin America. Learn more at www.houstonculture.org/carnival.

Houston's Juneteenth Celebration commemorates one of the region's most significant historic events, the abolition of slavery in the U.S., a major human rights milestone, which has been celebrated in Texas since 1865. Music fans gather from across the region at Miller Outdoor Theatre, Houston's largest public outdoor theater, to hear performances by noted artists representing the rich African American musical traditions of the region, including blues, jazz, brass band, funk and zydeco. Houston Institute for Culture is planning Houston's National Sesquicentennial Juneteenth Celebration to commemorate the 150 year anniversary of Juneteenth. Learn more at www.houstonculture.org/juneteenth.

Celebrate Houston! presents traditional arts and cultural interests that are found all over the world, but reside in the greater Houston area among the nation's most diverse population. In much the same format as the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Celebrate Houston! offers cultural arts entertainment, educational exhibits, workshops and food traditions. Celebrate Houston! is planned to be the flagship festival of the Houston Museum of Culture in the future. Learn more at www.celebratehouston.org.

Houston Institute for Cultures's city-wide events are produced with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, Texas Commission on the Arts, and the City of Houston through the Miller Theatre Advisory Board and Houston Arts Alliance, and others.
