TRADITIONAL ARTS PROGRAMS

Houston Institute for Culture presents traditional arts events in many Houston venues, from large parks and theaters, to university environments and arts venues. The organization routinely presents events at The Artery and East End Studio Gallery. Traditional Arts programs are presented with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, Texas Commission on the Arts, and the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

The Artery is a secret gem in Houston. Operating for more than two decades, it presents live music, films, art exhibits, talks and panel discussions in a house concert environment. Houston Institute for Culture began offering programs at The Artery in 2007, including educational performances by New Zulu Mari Gras Indians from New Orleans, Trio Nazim from Kazakhstan, Huehuetl from Mexico, Houston singer-songwriter Ira Perez, Texas Filipino reggae band The Presidents, and many more.

East End Studio Gallery is an event space and art gallery. Curated art openings and small festivals are often presented concurrently. From turntable artists and poets to mariachis and eclectic regional music groups, such as Los Pistoleros de Tejas, HIFC has presented and co-sponsored over one hundred events in the East End Studio Gallery and in its previous facilities around Houston. In addition to self-produced events, HIFC co-sponsors series such as Voices Breaking Boundaries' East End Live Art productions and many community events and fundraisers, where music is often presented to raise money for local needs or for areas affected by natural disasters. The gallery participates in the Houston Art Crawl and produces events for special occasions, such as el dia de los muertos and a holiday arts market.

Many of Houston Institute for Cultures's traditional arts events are produced with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, Texas Commission on the Arts, and the City of Houston through the Miller Theatre Advisory Board and Houston Arts Alliance, and others.
